Project Description Asset Management as a Foundation for Operational Technology CybersecurityInitial Public Draft

NIST NCCoE is seeking public feedback on a draft project description for an OT asset management initiative that will demonstrate practical approaches for OT asset discovery, inventory, configuration, and change management.

This NIST NCCoE project aims to demonstrate practical approaches for Operational Technology (OT) asset management, including automated and manual discovery, inventory management, configuration management, and change management processes. The project will collaborate with asset owners, operators, and solution providers to demonstrate real-world technologies for OT asset management and visibility using commercially available products. The initiative will result in a freely available NIST Cybersecurity Practice Guide addressing foundational challenges related to OT asset discovery, capturing configurations, and managing change throughout the asset lifecycle.

--- [ Regulatory impact ] ---

Effective OT asset management is foundational for implementing modern cybersecurity practices like risk assessment, network segmentation, and zero trust architectures in OT environments. Without comprehensive asset inventories, organizations cannot fully understand their cybersecurity risks or defend environments they cannot see, making this project critical for DIBs operating in OT sectors.
