SP 800-73-6, Interfaces for Personal Identity Verification: Part 1 – PIV Card Application Namespace, Data Model and RepresentationInitial Working Draft

NIST released an initial working draft of SP 800-73-6 Part 1 to update the PIV card data model for post-quantum cryptography.

This document is an initial working draft of SP 800-73-6 Part 1, which proposes updates to the PIV Card Application Namespace, Data Model, and Representation to support post-quantum cryptography (PQC). The draft introduces a dual-stack model that preserves existing classical PIV keys while adding new key references and data objects for PQC credentials, ensuring backward compatibility and incremental deployment. NIST is seeking public feedback through mailing lists and GitHub repositories to accelerate standardization and implementation of PQC in PIV credentials.

--- [ Regulatory impact ] ---

DIBs must monitor evolving PIV standards to ensure their identity verification systems remain compliant with future cryptographic requirements, particularly as post-quantum algorithms become mandatory.
