CVE-2026-23760
CRITICAL ⌖ ON CISA KEV · EXPLOITEDSmarterMail's force-reset-password API allows unauthenticated attackers to reset admin passwords via an alternate channel, enabling full administrative compromise.
SmarterMail's password reset API fails to verify existing credentials or reset tokens for system administrator accounts, permitting anonymous requests to reset admin passwords. This authentication bypass directly enables full administrative compromise of the mail server, allowing attackers to pivot to other systems or exfiltrate data. DIB organizations must ensure all SmarterMail instances are patched immediately and review API authentication controls for similar alternate-path vulnerabilities.
Shame score — An unauthenticated attacker can reset any administrator account without verification, representing a severe, avoidable failure in access control that directly enables full system compromise.
▸ RECOMMENDED ACTION Actively exploited (CISA KEV) — remediate now, ahead of your normal patch cycle.
SmarterTools SmarterMail contains an authentication bypass using an alternate path or channel vulnerability in the password reset API. The force-reset-password endpoint permits anonymous requests and fails to verify the existing password or a reset token when resetting system administrator accounts. This could allow an unauthenticated attacker to supply a target administrator username and a new password to reset the account, resulting in full administrative compromise of the SmarterMail instance.
